Rambling with Irish Rare Breeds

This fun-filled resource explores 9 Irish rare breeds, as well as having some fun activities to try out, at home or in school!

Introduction

In 2018, Agri Aware and the Department of Agriculture teamed up to bring primary school pupils on a journey to learn all about rare breeds of farm animals. These animals were once common on farms in Ireland hundreds of years ago but are now classed as rare – meaning there are not many left.

Over the years, different breeds were created and were better at producing foods such as meat and milk. Some animals, like the horse, were also replaced by machinery for the use of transport. It is important to learn about these animals so that we can understand more about Irish history and how we can save these rare breeds.

This fun-filled resource explores 9 Irish rare breeds, as well as having some fun activities to try out, at home or in school! It is also a great addition to our Dig In! Learning about Life on the Farm and Countryside Resource.
