Open Farm 2018

Sun shines for hugely successful Inaugural Agri Aware Open Farm Day on May Bank Holiday.

Agri Aware’s inaugural ‘National Open Farm Day’ took place on May Bank Holiday (Monday, 7th May 2018). The event saw over 6,000-people attend the event hosted over four mixed enterprise farms in Cork, Mayo, Wicklow and Dublin. The farms across the country simultaneously opened their gates to the public to help educate consumers about what happens on a working farm and to encourage families to learn more about where our food comes from.
A pre-event survey carried out by Red C carried behalf of Agri Aware discovered that 1 in 10 Irish people had never visited a farm.
The aim of the event was to educate the general public on the day-to-day life of a farmer and showcase the work that goes in to providing good quality and safe food in a sustainable way and the role of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) in Ireland.

In line with the Agri Aware mission statement – to “improve the image and understanding of Irish Agriculture” - The Open Farm event involved farm walks, educational talks, sheep shearing and milking demo cows which were a huge hit with the public, as families from both urban and rural areas.  Cookery demonstrations with chefs – Edward Hayden, Sharon Hearne-Smith, Lily Higgins and Catherine Leyden showcased the Farm to Fork journey on each of the individual farms.
The Agri Aware team are already busy planning next year’s event! If you have any further queries on the event please call 01 4601103 or email office@agriaware.ie
