The Irish Holstein Friesian Association is a member owned organisation directed by an IHFA Board elected from it's 3,500 members in 15 Club areas. The Association is responsible for the validity and upkeep of the herdbook of Holstein Friesian Cattle and for giving direction to the development and promotion of the breed in Ireland through it's many events and services. National Ploughing Championships
Ploughing as a sport between neighbours has probably gone on for hundreds of years. However, in 1931, the ultimate challenge was put to Kildare man J.J. Bergin, Athy, by his long time friend Denis Allen, Gorey, Co. Wexford when they argued which county had the best ploughmen. The first inter county ploughing match was organised with 40 entries and the National Ploughing Association was born.The first National Ploughing Championships held that year cost of 9 3s and 5 pence. Today the NPA concept challenge remains the same but now over 300 competitors from 32 counties as well as international visitors take the ploughing challenge.

In the early 1960s, three other independent co-operative marts were established in Co. Clare at Kilrush, Ennistymon, and Scariff. These three mart Societies eventually amalgamated with Clare Co-Op Marts, Ennis to form what is now Clare Marts Ltd.
Approximately 50% of the cattle at Clare Marts is now young animals under one year old. At peak autumn periods, the Society handles approximately 2500 weanling animals weekly. These weanlings, the majority of which are Continental, are produced in a healthy environment, on small farms and on a single suckled cow/calf basis.

Mullinahone
Established in 1893, Mullinahone Co-op is the oldest registered independent working Co-op in the country. Unlike the majority of the small Co-ops in the 60s and 70s, it did not amalgamate into the larger entities such as Avonmore, Waterford, Dairygold etc., but decided to go it alone. In order to survive and create badly needed employment in a mainly rural area, Mullinahone Co-op had to be innovative and progressive and diversify. As a consequence, today there are four main divisions in Mullinahone Co-op: Compsey Creamery Society Ltd, National Distribution Company, Eurotags and Mullinahone Oil. With a turnover of €21m, it employs over 85 staff members.

IFFPG
IFFPG is primarily funded through a levy that is charged on all silage plastic that members place on the market. The levy, in addition to a small collection fee, ensures that IFFPG can guarantee a collection service to farmers nationwide, either at the farm or at a bring-centre. Farmers can reduce their collection costs by ensuring that they present a 6 digit label code to IFFPG prior to, or at, collection. The development of a Labelling Tracking System allows for IFFPG and Enforcement Officers to identify and pursue un-levied silage plastic entering the market.
